In 1950, Lancia unveiled the groundbreaking Aurelia, the world's first car with a V6 engine, at the Turin Motor Show. The Aurelia featured advanced unitary construction, all-independent suspension, and inboard brakes mounted on the combined gearbox/rear transaxle. The sedan version was soon joined by the stylish B20 Coupé, designed by Pinin Farina.

The new car was called the Aurelia Spider, known in-house as the B24, and the marketers spelled out the car's intended target with an added designation: Tipo America. Introduced not in Turin, but at the 1955 Brussels Motor Show, the Spider was powered by the same 2,451-cc V-6 introduced in the Third Series GT launched in 1953, rated at 118 hp.
