The midsize, front-wheel drive sedan had been slated to replace the venerable RWD 505; however, Peugeot decided to keep the 505 in production for a few more years, much as Volvo kept the 240 around after the 740/760 debuted. The 405 sedan became available to Francophiles in October 1987, and the station wagon arrived a bit later, in May 1988.

The Peugeot wagon history starts in 1948 with the 203 sedan, Peugeot's first post war car, and a completely new one at that. A modern unibody sedan, it had the first of Peugeot's long line of classic four cylinder engines: iron block with an aluminum alloy hemi-head, valves actuated by pushrods. The 405's sleek, Pininfarina-penned shape hides a chassis every bit as capable and communicative as the famous 205 hatchback. If the 8-valve S was lots of fun, surely the twin-cam, 16-valve version (thus the Mi16 name) with almost 40 percent more power would be even better? I bought it on the spot.
